Durgashtakam -Lyrics and meaning

Durga Ashtakam praises the qualities of Devi Durga in her nine divine manifestation .Recitation of these verses is very helpful to calm the mind and get relief from normal migraine and headache.

1. Katyayani Mahamaye Khadgabanadhanurdhari
   Khadgadharini Chandi Durgadevi Namostute
   
  कात्यायनि महामाये खड्गबाण धनुधरि
  खड्ग धारिणि चण्डि दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (1)

Sri Durga Devi is Sri Kaathyayani, the Goddess of Victory and the daughter of Sage Kathyayana; She has sword and bow as weapons; She adorns the sword; and She is Chandi, the protector. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.
 
2. Vasudeva sute Kali Vasudeva Sahodhari 
   Vasundharashriye nande Durgadevi Namostute

   वसुदेव सुते कालि वासुदेव सहोदरी
   वसुन्दरा श्रिये दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (2)

Sri Durga Devi is the daughter of Sri Vasudeva; She is the sister of Vaasudheva, Sri Krishna; She is the mother earth and She is the Goddess of wealth. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

3.Yoganidre mahanidre yoga maye maheshwari
  yogasiddhkarisuddhe durgadevi namostute

योग निद्रे महा निद्रे यूग माये महेश्वरी
योगशिद्धिकरी शुद्धे दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (3)

Sri Durga Devi is in Yoga Nidhra; She exists in the deep meditative sleep; She is the core of Yoga and She is the great illusion; She is the Greatest Goddess; She blesses the Yogic attributes; and She is pure. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

4.Shankhachakragadapane sarngajyayatbahave
  pitambradhare dhanye durgadevi namostute

शङ्ख चक्र गदा पाणे शार्ङ्ग ज्यायत बाहवे
पीताम्बर धरे धन्ये दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (4)

Sri Durga Devi holds the holy conch, the holy wheel and gada as the weapons; She blows the holy conch; She adorns yellow color garments; and She blesses prosperity. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

5.Rgyajussamatharvanascatussamantalokini
  brahmaswarupini brahmi durgadevi namostute

 ऋग्यजुस्सामाथर्वाणश्चतुस्सामन्त लोकिनी
 ब्रह्मस्वरूपिन्णि ब्राह्मि दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (5) 

Sri Durga Devi exists in the Four Vedas such as Rug, Yajur, Sama and Atharvana; She is in the form of Brahmam, the ultimate supreme consciousness; and She is Brahmi, the powerful. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

6.Vrsninam kulsambhoote vishnunathsahodhari
  vrsniroopdhare dhanye durgadevi namostute

 व्रुष्नीणां कुलसम्भूते विष्णुनाथ सहोदरि
 व्रुष्णीरूप धरे धन्ये दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (6) 

Sri Durga Devi is powerful and passionate; She is the sister of Lord Vishnu; She is of handsome appearance; and She bestows wealth. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

7.Sarvajne sarvage sarve sarvese sarvasakshini 
  sarvamrtajatabhare durgadevi namostute

  सर्वज्ञे सर्वगे शर्वे सर्वेशे सर्व साक्षिणी
  सर्वाम्रुत जटाभारे दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (7)

Sri Durga Devi is omnipresent; She is aware of everything; She belongs to Lord Shiva; and She holds nectar in Her plaited hair. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

8. Ashtabahu mahasattve ashtami navamipriye 
   attahaspriye bhadre durgadevi namostute

 अष्टबाहु महासत्त्वे अश्टमी नवमी प्रिये
 अट्टहास प्रिये भद्रे दुर्गा देवि नमोऽस्तुते (8) 

Sri Durga Devi has eight hands; She is fond of Ashtami and Navami; Her laughter is powerful and fierce; and She protects the devotees. My humble and ardent Salutations to Sri Durga Devi.

9.Durgastakamidam  punyam bhaktito yah patthennarah
  sarvakamaamavapnoti durgalokam  sa gachhati

  दुर्गाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं भक्तितो यःपठेन्नरः
  सर्व काम मवाप्नोति दुर्गालोकं च गच्छति (9)
 
The persons who sincerely read and recite this Sri Durga Ashtakam shall be blessed with virtuous benefits such as fulfillment of their desires and wishes and reaching of the abode of Sri Durga on liberation.
