1.कुतस्त्वा कश्मलमिदं विषमे समुपस्थितम् ।
अनार्यजुष्टमस्वर्ग्यमकीर्तिकरमर्जुन
Meaning :-The supreme personality of Godhead said ” My dear Arjuna , how have these impurities come upon you? They are not at all befitting a man who knows the value of life .They lead not to higher planets but to infamy .
2.कार्पण्यदोषोपहतस्वभावः
पृच्छामि त्वां धर्मसम्मूढचेताः।
यच्छ्रेयः स्यान्निश्चितं ब्रूहि तन्मे
शिष्यस्तेऽहं शाधि मां त्वां प्रपन्नम्॥
Now I am confused about my duty and have lost all composure because of miserly weakness , in this condition I am asking you to tell me for certain what is best for me .Now I am your disciple and a soul surrendered unto you .Please instruct me !
3.अशोच्यानन्वशोचस्त्वं प्रज्ञावादांश्च भाषसे।
गतासूनगतासूंश्च नानुशोचन्ति पण्डिताः
The supreme personality of Godhead said” While speaking learned words , you are mourning for what is not worthy of grief . Wise people neither lament for dead nor for the living.
4.न त्वेवाहं जातु नासं न त्वं नेमे जनाधिपाः।
न चैव न भविष्यामः सर्वे वयमतः परम्
Never was there a time when I did not exist ,nor you nor all these kings , and never in the future shall any of them cease to exist .
5.देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा।
तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति
As the embodied soul continously passes ,in this body from boyhood to youth to old age , the soul similarily passes into another body at death . A sober person is not bewildered by such a change .
6.मात्रास्पर्शास्तु कौन्तेय शीतोष्णसुखदुःखदाः।
आगमापायिनोऽनित्यास्तांस्तितिक्षस्व भारत
O son of Kunti , the non permanent appearance of happiness and distress , and their disappearance in dure course are like the appearance and disappearance of winter and summer seasons . They arise from sense perception . O scion of Bharata, and one must learn to tolerate them without being disturbed .
7. यं हि न व्यथयन्त्येते पुरुषं पुरुषर्षभ |
समदु:खसुखं धीरं सोऽमृतत्वाय कल्पते ||
O best among men Arjuna , the person who is not disturbed by happiness and distress and is steady in both is certainly eligible for salvation .
8. नासतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सतः।
उभयोरपि दृष्टोऽन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः।।
Those who are seers of the truth have concluded that of the non existent material body , there is no endurance and of eternal soul there is no change .This they have concluded by studying the nature of both .
9.अविनाशि तु तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् ।
विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य न कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति ॥
That which pervades the entire body you should know to be indestructible .No one is able to destroy that imperishable soul .
10.अन्तवन्त इमे देहा नित्यस्योक्ताः शरीरिणः।
अनाशिनोऽप्रमेयस्य तस्माद्युध्यस्व भारत।।
The material body of indestructible ,immeasurable and eternal living entity is sure to come to an end , therefore fight , O descendent of Bharata.
11.न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचि- न्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः ।
For the soul there is neither death , nor birth at any time. He has not come into being , does not come into being and will not come into being .He is unborn , eternal , ever existing and primeval .He is not slain when the body is slain .
12. वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय
नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि।
तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा
न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही।।
As a person puts on new garments , giving up old ones , the soul similarily accepts the new material bodies giving up the old and useless ones .
13.नैनं छिन्दन्ति शस्त्राणि नैनं दहति पावकः।
न चैनं क्लेदयन्त्यापो न शोषयति मारुतः।।
The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon , nor burned by fire , nor moistened by water , nor withered by wind .
14. जातस्य हि ध्रुवो मृत्युर्ध्रुवं जन्म मृतस्य च।
तस्मादपरिहार्येऽर्थे न त्वं शोचितुमर्हसि
One who has taken his birth is sure to die and after death one is sure to take birth again . Therefore in the unavoidable discharge of your duty , you should not lament .
15. सुखदुःखे समे कृत्वा लाभालाभौ जयाजयौ । ततो युद्धाय युज्यस्व नैवं पापमवाप्स्यसि
Do thou fight for the sake of fighting ,without considering happiness or distress , loss or gain , victory or defeat , and by doing so , you will never incur sin .
16. नेहाभिक्रमनाशोऽस्ति प्रत्यवायो न विद्यते।
स्वल्पमप्यस्य धर्मस्य त्रायते महतो भयात्।।
In this endeavour there is no loss or no dimunition , and a little advancement on this path can protect one from most dangerous type of fear .
17. व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिरेकेह कुरुनन्दन।
बहुशाखा ह्यनन्ताश्च बुद्धयोऽव्यवसायिनाम्।।
Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose and their aim is one . O beloved child of Kurus , the intelligence of those who are irresolute is many branched .
18. भोगैश्वर्यप्रसक्तानां तयापहृतचेतसाम्।
व्यवसायात्मिका बुद्धिः समाधौ न विधीयते।।
In the minds of those who are too attached to sense enjoyment and material opulences , and who are bewildered by such things , the resolute determination for devotional service to supreme lord does not take place .
19. त्रैगुण्यविषया वेदा निस्त्रैगुण्यो भवार्जुन।
निर्द्वन्द्वो नित्यसत्त्वस्थो निर्योगक्षेम आत्मवान्।।
The Vedas deal mainly with the subject of three modes of material nature . O Arjuna become transcendental to these three modes . Be free from all dualities and from all anxieties , for all anxieties for gain and safety and be established in the self .
20. कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन ।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भुर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ॥
You have a right to perform your prescribed duty but you are not entitled to the fruits of action . Never consider yourself the cause of result of your activities , and never be attached to not doing your duty .
